Autopilot

Autopilot

The autopilot is a very useful device, which is intended to partially hand out the skipper. It works by moving the rudder to maintain its course without human’s intervention. In its simplest version, its functionality is limited to maintaining the course, but its capabilities are often much more extensive. They can, among other things, reach a specific point, make a turn, or even carry out manoeuvres in accordance with all the rules, related to the search for a man who has fallen overboard.

What should be kept in mind when using the autopilot?

  • The autopilot uses a lot of electricity. When using it, you should regularly check the state of charge of the batteries.
  • When the autopilot is on, you cannot turn the rudder by yourself. This can lead to damage to the device and, consequently, to expensive repairs.
